Journalist Pedro Pablo Kumul Amaya was assassinated on Monday, November 21. in the town of Castillo, located in Xalapa, Veracruz. Unofficially, local media indicated that died during a conflict with a motorist.

Kamul was in a taxi-type vehicle when he reportedly had a problem with the driver of another car, who allegedly chased him and killed him with a firearm.

“The reporter and broadcaster Pedro Pablo Kumul Amaya was murdered by unknown persons while driving a taxi in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Xalapa”.

“He would have had a road problem with the occupants of a truck, he was chased and caught up in the streets of the Lomas de Casa Blanca neighborhood, very close to a lagoon.”

allegedly Pablo received a bullet impact, after which he crashed his car into a post. Next to him was a woman, who was unharmed in the attack during which witnesses heard at least three shots.

The death of the communicator was confirmed by the radio station where he worked, which expressed its condolences and demanded that the Veracruz authorities clarify what happened.

Pablo’s friends and family have dedicated some farewell words to him. Among the comments are some such as: “I cannot understand why someone with so many dreams and goals to fulfill had to leave this world” or “Have a good trip to heaven dear friend, thank you for your words, your hugs and the great support and solidarity that you always gave me.”

This 2022 has been one of the most violent years for the journalistic union. As of November, there have been 16 homicides of journalistscounting that of Pedro Pablo Kumul Anaya.

The victims were José Luis Gamboa Arenas, Margarito Martínez, Lourdes Maldonado López, Roberto Toledo, Heber López Vázquez, Jorge Luis Camero, Juan Carlos Muñiz, Armando Linares López, Luis Enrique Ramírez, Sheila Johana García, Yessenia Mollinedo, Antonio de la Cruz, Ernesto Mendez, Fredid Román and Juan Arjón López.

This year it surpassed 2021 regarding violence against journalists, because on that occasion Seven people dedicated to this profession were murdered. This year Baja California and Veracruz head the list of states where the most murders of journalists have been recorded, with two and four cases respectively.

The total number of journalists murdered in the Mexican Republic amounts to 70, according to the United Nations (UN). This international body has urged the government to take action on multiple occasions.

The UN has indicated that the journalistic union is one of those most at risk due to threats, violence, misinformation, online bullying and hate speech.

“We must put an end to the common culture of impunity, so that journalists can carry out their essential work,” the organization mentioned on November 2 in the framework of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.
