Bad tire management took away the runner-up, say international media

Checo Perez was close to closing as runner-up in Formula 1, but fell to charles leclerc in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The international press pointed out that the tires played ‘crooked’ for the Mexican.

“He had trouble keeping the right front tire alive. That forced a relatively early pit stop, after 15 laps which effectively locked him into two stops,” The Race wrote.

“He gave up track position to leclerc when re-entering the pits and ran out of time to regain position. His pace was relatively good, but he couldn’t match his teammate’s tire management (max verstappen)”, they add.

Couldn't match Verstappen's management

Motoxbox pointed out: “He has not been able to manage the tires in the first stint or the second. In the third he attacks at full speed to try to reach leclercbut he is one or two laps away from taking second place, both in the race and in the world championship”.

Leclerc, runner-up in F1 2022

The publication Crash, not only argued that there was a mismanagement of tires, but that he wasted time with other drivers. “He did not have the ability to take care of the tires, and Leclerc threatened him during the first stage with the media. He was naive on a couple of occasions when overtaking Hamilton and Vettelwasting expensive time before leclerc”, they conclude.
