The world’s largest four-day workweek experiment is succeeding

The five-day workweek has long been a staple of the workforcebut a massive experiment to test a four day work week in the UK, which started three months ago, is getting incredibly promising results.

The workforce wants a change. While stay-at-home orders for the covid-19 pandemic demonstrated Since many jobs may move (at least partially) to a remote setup, the next big change could be the length of the workweek itself. In June, more than 3,300 employees across United Kingdom began to participate in a six-month experiment to test the effectiveness of a four-day work week. The pilot program created by the non-profit organization 4 Day Global, has arrived now to its midpoint, and the rresults are overwhelmingly positive. ANDspecifically, 88% of survey participants said the four-day work week is working well.

The organizations in the project UK pilot are providing real-time data and insights that are worth their weight in gold. Essentially, they are laying the groundwork for the future of work by implementing a four-day week in companies of all sizes and in almost all sectors, telling us exactly what they are finding as they go,” said CEO of 4 Day Week Global, Joe O’Connor, in a press release.

ANDl 86% of respondents indicated that they are likely or extremely likely to maintain the four-day workweek, while a total of 46% of respondents reported some increase in productivity. Companies also reported a relatively smooth transition from the traditional five-day work week. On a scale of 1 “extremely challenging” to 5 “extremely smooth,” 4 Day Week Global found that 98% of respondents rated the transition to the four-day work week a 3 or higher.

Before the start of the experiment, 4 Day Week Global said this is the largest pilot program of its kind. MAs long as workers maintain 100% of their productivity, they will also maintain 100% of their salary if 80% work of the traditional work week. The nonprofit has been collaborating on the pilot program with labor think tank Autonomy, as well as researchers from the University of Cambridge, Boston College and the University of Oxford. Companies participating in the experiment range from fish and chip restaurants to public relations firms and of technology. While the transition to a four-day workweek is certainly attractive, O’Connor acknowledges that it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to a workplace revolution.

“We are learning that for many it is a fairly smooth transition and for others have understandable obstacles, especially among those with comparatively fixed practices, systems, or culturesare inflexible that go back well into the last century,” said O’Connor.

4 Day Week Global also published testimonials from high-level executives from some of the companies involved in the project. Trio Media CEO Claire Daniels said: “Productivity has remained high, with an increase in team well-being and with 44% better financial performance.” For your partSharon Platts, director of human resources at Outcomes First Group, said: “While it is still early days, our confidence in continuing beyond the trial is growing and the impact on the well-being of colleagues has been palpable.”

The four-day work week is a tempting concept for the working class, and it appears to be increasingly legitimate. as pilot programs like this one collect illuminating data on the concept. Microsoft flirted with a four day work week in Japan and saw higher sales numbers and employee happiness levels. The big hurdle moving forward will be getting buy-in from enough companies and executives to make the four-day work week a permanent fixture in the global job market, but the results of big projects like 4 Day Week Global only bring us closer to that ultimate goal.
