authorities of Spain reported that the former president Enrique Pena Nieto has authorization to reside in that country as an investor.
According to information from Europe PressAlthough the Spanish government has denied that it has been granted one of the so-called ‘golden visas’, it states that it is unaware of the total investment amount that Peña Nieto has in said country.
The media indicates that through a parliamentary response to a question from EH Bildu deputy Jon Iñarritu, the Government assures that “it has no record of the existence of any visa requested or issued in the name of Peña Nieto.”
The Basque deputy had asked if the former president had been given one of the so-called ‘golden visas’ for investors and had been interested in knowing the investment he had in Spain in order to have been able to access this visa reserved a priori to big investors.

In its response, the Spanish Executive has pointed out that Peña Nieto “is the holder of a residence permit as an investor” in accordance with the law of 2013 to support entrepreneurs and its internationalization.
It adds that “said law allows this type of authorization, among others, to the owners of real estate in Spain with an investment of equal or more than 500 thousand euros” and that they meet the rest of the requirements.
In the case of Peña Nieto, the former president credits the investment worth 570 thousand eurosfree of charges and encumbrances, in a commercial premises located in Madrid“.
As the Government has recalled, to obtain authorization it is not “necessary to accredit other investments, so it is unknown what other assets Peña Nieto might have for the purpose of obtaining authorization.”
On the other hand, when asked if the former president tried “some other regularization channel” before, the Executive has recognized that “he requested a residence permit for cases not provided for in the Immigration Regulations, which was inadmissible for processing for not fulfilling the requirements demanded for it”.
Investigations against the former president
At the beginning of August, the General Prosecutor of the Republic (FGR) reported that it has three open investigations against former President Enrique Peña Nieto.
One of the inquiries is for possible electoral and patrimonial crimes and the construction company is involved in it OHL.
Another is for possible operations with resources of illicit origin and the third is for alleged illicit enrichmentThe Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
