Belarusian Army on High Alert After Referendum Looking for Pro-Russian Forces in Ukraine

the president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenkoput the army on high alert, after the call, by pro-Russian forces, for referendums on annexation to Russia on Ukrainian territory, which unleashed a harsh warning of Kyiv.

“The situation is very serious,” Lukashenko said during a meeting with the secretary of the Belarusian State Security Council, Alexander Grigoryevich, according to the Anadolu news agency.

“I would even say dangerous, and under no circumstances should we lower our guard. There is nothing to fear. We need to put some military units on alert by wartime standards. This is necessary,” he added.

According to the official Turkish agency, the Belarusian leader reiterated his support for Russia and assured that “we have created a defense space and, in fact, we have common armed forces with Russia.”

“There should not be and will not be any blows to the back, to the side, to the flanks of the Russian troops through Belarus. This is our obligation to our ally,” he emphasized.

The pro-Russian separatists announced the urgent holding, between September 23-27, of referendums in the pro-Russian separatist territories of Donetsk Y Luganskin the Donbas region (eastern Ukraine) as well as the Kherson (south) and Zaporizhia (southeast) regions, all occupied by the Russian army.

The Ukrainian government warned that it will “liquidate” the Russian threat.

Countries like the United States, Germany and France denounced the referendums and assured that the international community would never accept the results. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) considered that the consultations represent an “additional escalation” of the conflict.
