An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 occurred on Saturday off the east coast of Taiwanreported the United States Geological Survey.
The quake struck shortly after 1:30 p.m. local time about 50 kilometers north of the city of Taitung, at a depth of 10 kilometers, the USGS said.

The local press did not report any personal or material damage caused by the earthquake.
For its part, the Taiwanese Central Office of the Climate evaluated the magnitude of the tremor at 6.4, and indicated that it occurred at a depth of 7.3 kilometers.

Taiwan is regularly affected by earthquakes, as the island is located near the junction of two tectonic plates.
The island does not issue a tsunami alert unless the earthquake has a magnitude greater than 7.0.
