By agreement of the Presidency, all the security of the National Guard passes to the Secretary of Defense, informed President López Obrador.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reported this Monday that he will send an agreement this week so that the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) be in charge of the National Guard.
“I am going to issue an agreement so that the National Guard completely depends on the Sedena and we await the result of the reform“, advancement.
With this, the reform to the National Guard proposed by the president will be protected in case it is not approved.
After being questioned about his tactic of resorting to agreements to avoid the legislative power, the president explained that the reform initiative will still be sent but he will look for a way to apply it administratively, “in case it doesn’t happen, it’s going to stay that way anyway.”
“What I want is that is constitutionally established so that they don’t turn it back because if we leave it without constitutional reform it will remain but what I don’t want is for the same thing to happen with the National Guard as with the Federal Police”.
As you have explained on previous occasions, the Incorporation of the National Guard into the Army seeks to prevent its members from falling into illicit acts as members of the Federal Police have done.
One of the best known cases has been that of Genaro García Luna, secretary of Public Security and chief of the Federal Police during the government of Felipe Calderón, who was accused in the United States of receive millions of dollars in bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel.
López Obrador will analyze the ways in which this can be done, either through a modification of the government’s internal regulations, by decree or by reform of the Federal Public Administration Law. This is how the president seeks to strengthen one of the priorities that his government has before the end of his six-year term.
“I don’t want anything to be left to us, the sooner it is done the better so that the time we have left, the decisions that are still being made are consolidated at the end of my government,” he said.
