Demi Lovato opens up about her new pronoun preference

(CNN) — Demi Lovato, the singer and former Disney Channel actress, started using the pronoun “she” again.

Lovato, who identified as non-binary in 2021 and changed her pronouns to “they,” said this week on the “Spout” podcast that she “has been feeling more feminine” lately and adopted her old pronouns.

“I’m a very fluid person when it comes to my gender, my sexuality, my music and my creativity,” Lovato said on the podcast, a series of short celebrity interviews.

Lovato uses both pronouns now, according to her Instagram account. She has also said that she identifies as queer and pansexual.

Demi Lovato, who came out as non-binary last year, said she’s going back to using the pronoun “she” because she “feels more feminine lately.”

It’s not unusual for non-binary people to use gender pronouns or swap pronouns: singer Janelle Monáe recently came out as non-binary and said she would continue to use the pronouns “she” in addition to “they.”

Lovato said on “Spout” that while “everyone gets pronouns wrong” at some point, “it’s about respect.”

The “Cool for the Summer” singer is set to release her next album, “Holy F**k,” later this month. One of the songs, “Skin of My Teeth,” is inspired by Lovato’s health struggles following an overdose in 2018, which caused multiple strokes and brain damage. The star said on “Spout” that she was sober during the making of her album, something she is “so proud of.”
