La Jornada – “Hypocrisy” of priests in the case of Jesuits: López Obrador

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador criticized the representatives of the Catholic Church who have criticized his security strategy after the murder of two Jesuit priests in Cerocahui, Chihuahua. “Do you want us to solve problems with violence?” he asked.

He rejected the “hypocrisy” of the religious, since “they were not capable” of denouncing that the possible person responsible for the crime -José Noriel Portillo Gil, the crook, leader of a cell of the Sinaloa cartel in the region – enjoyed the protection of local authorities.

In yesterday’s conference, the president referred again to the murders of the priests Javier Campos and Joaquín Mora, in the Cerocahui church, together with a tourist guide.

He asserted that this and other cases that have caused commotion are used to campaign against him, and insisted that “the only prudent one” has been Pope Francis, who points out that violence is not a response to violence.

Instead, he explained, “others (clerics), even in Chihuahua, who know very well what happened, were not able to say: ‘this originates because the local authorities protected this person, and although there was an arrest warrant, he acted with absolute freedom and participated in politics, but since he helped the conservative parties, he had protection or they tolerated him’. But the priests are not capable of saying that, and I am not generalizing”.

The president responded to the call made over the weekend by the Jesuit Javier Ávila, a religious leader in that Tarahumara community: “Hugs are no longer enough to cover the bullets (…) our tone is peaceful, but loud and clear,” he said. the prelate, alluding to the President’s security strategy.

“Those expressions that ‘hugs are not enough for us’. What then do the priests want? That we solve problems with violence? Are we all going to disappear? Are we going to wager on war? Why didn’t they act that way with Felipe Calderón? Why did they remain silent when the massacres were ordered, when ‘kill them hot’ was put into practice, when the Army’s high command was told: ‘you do your job and we take care of human rights’? Why this hypocrisy? This should not be allowed to anyone, much less a religious, whether he is a pastor of an evangelical church or a priest; the truth”, emphasized López Obrador.

He called not to fall into politicking. “One thing is that they have sympathy with the conservative parties and another lies and slander, raising false testimonies.”

He reiterated, as he said the day before, that the publicist Carlos Alazraki “has Hitlerian thinking”, since he himself has publicly acknowledged that, in propaganda terms, the more lies that are expressed against the President’s movement, “the better it is for you.” The qualification caused rejection in the Jewish community, to which the president endorsed his respect, although he limited: “That does not mean that the entire community has a kind of letter of marque to harm, affect a movement of transformation just for its ideals. , his conservatism and, I repeat, his Hitlerism.”

For his part, the Undersecretary of Public Security, Ricardo Mejía, reported that the corresponding authorities, including the Army, continue to search for The Chuco. So far, he indicated, they have arrested 11 people linked to the criminal leader, of which three are his direct relatives.
