Uterine myomatosis: what is this disease and what are its symptoms?

Ximena Sariñana underwent emergency surgery at a private clinic, south of Mexico City, for a uterine myomatosis. But What is this condition that afflicted the Mexican singer? Here we tell you.

Uterine myomatosis, what is it?

The uterine myomatosis is the name given to benign tumors, also known as fibroidsof the smooth muscle of the uterus, which can sometimes become malignant, assures the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS).

  • Referring to fibroids as benign tumors means that they are not cancerous.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of uterine myomatosis, according to the NIH are:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding, sometimes with blood clots
  • Menstrual periods that may last longer than normal
  • Need to urinate more often
  • Pelvic cramps or pain during periods
  • Feeling of fullness or pressure in the lower abdomen
  • Pain during intercourse

However, they point out that in some cases this condition may not have any symptoms.

Risk factor’s

The age range of onset of fibroids It can range from 20 to 70 years, with a higher incidence between 35 and 45, however, there are some risk factors for suffering from this disease:

  • Nulliparity: nulliparity is a risk factor for the development of uterine myomatosis
  • Obesity and overweight: these factors increase the risk of developing fibroids due to the sustained estrogenic effect.
  • Conditions that increase estrogen exposure during reproductive years: these are risk factors for developing uterine myomatosis; such as being early menarche, that is, beginning to menstruate at an early age, late menopause, estrogen-producing ovarian tumors, intake of high doses and prolonged periods of oral hormones.

Who can suffer from uterine myomatosis?

The NIH maintains that any woman of reproductive age can suffer from this conditionin fact, according to their statistics until one in five women may have fibroids during their childbearing yearsand half of all women have fibroids by age 50.

While It is rare in women under 20 years of age. and more common in African-American women than in white, Hispanic, or Asian women.
